THOUGHTS & BELIEFS
“With our thoughts, we make the world"
The foundations of perception are shaped by experiences during our early years of development. Although we continue to build upon this base throughout our lives, these early years are crucial in shaping our view of our selves and the world.
Influence of caregivers. The wellbeing of children is largely dependent upon the health of their parents and other caregivers. Those who who grow up in abusive or neglectful environments often develop distorted thinking and beliefs that make it difficult to feel safe in their relationships as adults.
Impact of trauma. In addition to childhood abuse & neglect, our perceptions may be impacted by other traumatic experiences that threaten our physical, mental and emotional safety. War, rape, violence, natural disasters are only a few examples of events that can impair our thinking and sense of security in the world.
Other conditions that impact our perceptions include: mental disorders, drug and alcohol intoxication, brain injury, developmental impairments and more.
Patterns of rigid and/or confused thinking can trigger difficult emotions and lead to destructive behaviors that further distort our perceptions. This cycle repeats over and over until we address the core issues that fuel it.
Do you feel trapped by beliefs that keep you repeating old patterns? Therapy can help you develop a new way of thinking and improve how you feel in your relationships. Overtime, tiny shifts in perception can lead to a new way of living in the world. Taking this first step is often the most difficult, so cheers to you for considering that change is possible.
